Florida does not require boat insurance the way it requires auto insurance. That surprises people.

What does require it, in practice, is almost everyone else. Marinas usually want proof of liability before they give you a slip, and lenders require coverage on a financed boat. And the absence of a legal requirement does not make you any less liable if something goes wrong on the water.
